Lecture 1: Speed of sound in the ocean

Chapter 3, pages 31–34 in Marine Geophysics by E.J.W. Jones and Mapping submarine glacial landforms using acoustic methods by Jakobsson et al. provided as a PDF.

The course book only briefly covers the subject of speed of sound in the ocean. However, since this course has the main focus on marine geophysical mapping methods based on acoustics, the subject of sound propagation in elastic media is covered in more detail than in the course book. This lecture specifically addresses the sound speed variation in the water column. Later in the course, sound propagation in the geological media sub-bottom will also be discussed.
