GG5125 Marine Geophysics

Introduction

This course provides an introduction to marine geophysics aimed to establish a theoretical base for geological interpretation of marine geophysical data. The course covers the theory behind standard marine geophysical mapping methods, with focus on acoustic methods. The course includes a brief historical overview of how geophysical methods have been used to explore the oceans and how seafloor mapping has contributed to understanding of Earth's evolution.

After completing the course you are expected to:

  • know the most widely applied marine geophysical surveying methods
  • understand and describe the basic theories behind the most widely applied marine geophysical surveying methods
  • understand the principles of how marine geophysical data are interpreted geologically
  • be able to describe the role of marine geophysical methods have had for the understanding of the Earth's geological development

This course complements the on-site course “Marine geophysical mapping methods, 7.5 hp”, which is a practical mapping course based on field work in the waters surrounding Stockholm university’s field station at the island of Askö in the southern Stockholm archipelago. There are some unavoidable overlaps between the two courses since the onsite course does not require the course Marine geophysics 7.5 hp as a pre-requisite.

Which language?

This course is only offered in English. You must therefore answer questions in English. We are aware that this is your second language, and we promise to be lenient regarding language errors.

How will you be graded?

You will normally receive your graded exam within no longer than two weeks from the date of your exam. Your final grade is based on the following:

Credits ECTS grade Older system
0-39.5% F Fail
50-59.5% E Pass
60-69.6% D
70-79.5% C
80-89.5% B Pass with distinction
90-100% A

If you fail the course you are entitled to a re-exam. Please note that the dates for re-exam will be sent to you by the coarse leader.

Is there a course schedule?
